Clean beer glassware after glass renovation

Why Clean Beer Glassware Matters & The Benefits of Glass Renovation

The type and condition of the glassware you use can have a big effect on the presentation of your beer. You can have your dispense system set up perfectly, but if the glass isn't right, your pint may still not look as good as it should.

Nucleation, cleanliness and even how the glass has been washed and dried can all make a difference. In this guide, we'll look at why clean beer glassware matters, what glass renovation actually does and how to tell when your glasses could benefit from a deeper clean.

What is a nucleated beer glass?

If you look at the bottom of many beer glasses, you'll notice a small etched pattern or logo. This is known as nucleation.

The etched area creates points where bubbles can form and rise through the beer, helping to maintain the head and keeping the pint looking freshly poured for longer.

This doesn't mean you can't serve a good pint in a non-nucleated glass, but using the right glassware can certainly make a difference to how the beer presents.

Why does clean beer glassware matter?

Having the right glass is only part of it. The condition and cleanliness of the glass is just as important.

Even when glasses are washed regularly, over time they can develop a build-up of proteins, yeasts and other deposits that everyday glasswashing may not completely remove. You may also notice glasses starting to look dull or cloudy rather than clean and bright.

This can affect the presentation of the drink and stop you getting the best-looking pint from your dispense system. If you've gone to the trouble of looking after your beer, keeping your lines clean and setting your dispense equipment up correctly, it makes sense to look after the glass it's eventually being poured into too.

This is where glass renovation can help.

What is glass renovation?

Glass renovation is a deeper clean designed to remove build-up from glassware that normal washing may leave behind.

Renovate is a concentrated powder developed specifically for this purpose. It helps to remove blooms and strip away the build-up of proteins and yeasts that some detergents may not remove.

It can help restore older glassware and rejuvenate etched bases without leaving a residue or flavour taint. This can help extend the useful life of your glassware rather than replacing glasses simply because they have started to look tired.

It's not just older glasses that can benefit. We would recommend it is used for new glassware before it goes into service, to remove the release agent that can be left behind during the manufacturing process.

How often should you renovate beer glasses?

The manufacturer recommends using renovate bi-monthly, or when a water break test shows that renovation is needed, to help keep glassware in good condition.

Rather than simply waiting until glasses start to look dull or tired, periodically checking their condition can help you spot when they would benefit from a deeper clean.

How to renovate your beer glassware

Renovating your glassware is straightforward and can be carried out as part of your regular glass care routine.

What are the benefits of renovating beer glassware?

Regular glass renovation can help keep your glassware looking and performing at its best.

Renovating can help to remove the blooms and build-up that normal glasswashing may leave behind, helping older glasses look cleaner and brighter and giving your beer the best possible presentation.

It can also help extend the useful life of your glassware. If glasses have started to look tired because of removable build-up, renovating them may help restore them rather than replacing them unnecessarily.

It's also worth remembering that glass renovation isn't only for pubs and bars. If you have a home bar or draught beer setup, looking after your glassware is just as much a part of serving a good pint as looking after your beer lines and dispense equipment.

Keep your beer glassware at its best

Looking after your glassware doesn't need to be complicated. Regular washing, allowing glasses to dry properly and periodically renovating them can all help keep your glassware in good condition and your beer looking its best.
