A fob detector is an essential component in a beer dispense system, designed to prevent gas from entering the beer line when a keg runs empty.

Without a fob detector, gas can be drawn into the line, leading to fobbing (excess foam), wasted beer, and inconsistent pours. By automatically stopping the flow when the keg is empty, a fob detector helps protect both your product and your dispense system.

How a fob detector works

Fob detectors operate using a float mechanism and have two main modes:

Dispense Mode (Normal Operation)

In normal use, the unit is in dispense mode. When the keg empties, the internal float drops, automatically shutting off the flow of beer. This prevents gas from entering the line and stops the beer being dispensed.

Cleaning Mode

When switched to cleaning mode, the float is released, allowing cleaning fluid to pass through the system. This enables effective line cleaning without needing to remove the unit.

Why a fob detector is important

  • Prevents gas entering the beer line
  • Reduces fobbing and excessive foam
  • Minimises beer wastage
  • Helps maintain consistent dispense quality
  • Protects the system during keg changes

FAQ

What is fobbing?
Fobbing is when beer turns excessively foamy, often caused by gas entering the line when a keg runs empty.

Do I need a fob detector?
If you want to reduce beer waste and maintain consistent pours, a fob detector is highly recommended for cellar set ups. If you are setting up a home bar, you generally will not need a fob detector.

Can I clean my lines with it fitted?
Yes, switching to cleaning mode allows cleaning fluid to pass through the system.
