Gas pumps are used in beer dispense systems when standard gas pressure alone isn’t enough to move the beer efficiently from the keg to the tap.
In simpler terms, if your system struggles to pour at the correct speed or distance, a gas pump helps boost the flow and maintain consistent dispense performance.
When do you need a gas pump?
Gas pumps are typically required when:
- The beer line run is long (e.g. cellar to bar distance)
- There is a significant vertical lift between keg and tap
- You are running cask or metered dispense systems
- The brewery or brand specification requires controlled dispense
If your beer is pouring slowly or inconsistently, a gas pump is often part of the solution.
How gas pumps work
Gas pumps use gas pressure (such as CO₂, mixed gas, nitrogen, or compressed air) to help move beer through the lines at the correct speed, without affecting the carbonation or quality of the product.
System setup and guidance
To ensure correct performance, gas pumps should be set up properly within your dispense system:
- Gas pumps can be powered by CO₂, mixed gas, nitrogen, or compressed air
- Not every bar or tap will require a gas pump — for example, shorter runs or function rooms may not need one
- Keg systems should have one secondary regulator per pump to allow accurate pressure control
- Cask systems may use one secondary regulator for up to two pumps
- Each line should be fitted with on/off valves for control and maintenance
Important system limits
- A maximum of 15 secondary regulators should be connected to a single primary ring main
- Each gas pump should ideally supply no more than two dispense points
In some existing installations, three taps may be connected to a single pump. This can still work if:
- The required pour speed is maintained across all taps
- Or the user is satisfied with reduced flow when multiple taps are in use
Performance considerations
For systems requiring higher flow rates:
- Upgrading to ¾” braided line can improve performance
- Switching to mixed gas (where suitable) can allow higher operating pressures
Why gas pumps matter
A correctly set up gas pump system:
- Maintains consistent pour speed
- Prevents slow or uneven dispensing
- Supports long-distance or complex installations
- Helps meet brewery or brand specifications
